In the year 1914, four men from Sangli - Late Dhondo Vitthal Sakhdev, Late Gurunath Govind Toro, Late Vinayak Sadashiv Joshi and Late Rajaram Rawaji Chikodikar inspired by Lokmanya Tilak - founded City High School in Sangli, and it is the first school of Sangli Shikshan Sanstha. After that, His Highness Raja Chintamanrao Patawardhan Highschool was founded in the year 1960. It is mixed school – of boys and girls. Sanstha decided to form a separate school for girls. Then the girls' section of Patwardhan Highschool was shifted to paga chowk. In the year 1971, Late Ganesh Ramchandra Purohit Kanya Prashala was founded with the help of the donation of Late Dr. P. G. Purohit, the well known Surgeon of Sangli. The school has maintained glorious tradition for 30 years now.
At that time the school did not have it's own building. First headmaster Mr. A. G. Kunte and others decided to build the first floor. He himself was working and supervising the new construction. The school then was of only one division from 5th to 7th std. and two divisions of 8th to 10th std. In each division there were only 40 students. Today there are four divisions of each standard and there are 70 students in each division. The most remarkable thing is that from the beginning, students of the school stood in the merit list of S. S. C. Board. This bright success of the students is the outcome of teachers' hard-work. Personal and home guidance is given to each and every student.
The Junior College was started in the year 1991. Arts, Commerce and Science faculties are available. Total strength of the College is now 750. In a very short time Jr. college has gained high reputation. Therefore, parents wish to get admission to their daughters in this school and college only.
The school was awarded special grant of Rs. 10,000 by the Govt. of Maharashtra for the best school working in a city area in the year 1978-79. The school was awarded special sports grant of Rs. 10,000 by the Govt. of Maharashtra in the year 1995.
